Threats and opportunities in DIY Design

Again, from Openwear’s blog

This summer the Industrial Designers Society of America held an exciting conference on the new challenges given by DIY Design and
Crowdsourcing. Thanks to the rise of thousands of new communities, platforms, services and technologies that connect and enable networked artisans, makers and amateurs, there is the need to a re-discussion of the traditional boundaries of design. As you can argue, this is exactly what we’re working on here at Openwear.

The conference was organized in 6 main topics:

DIY as an innovation engine; Crowdsourcing; Independent design and creation; Consumer customization; Slow craft; Enabling technologies.

The definition they used areq uite interesting and, navigating in the blog, you can find an impressive amount of information: it’s the state of the art of what is going on in the re-definition of material production by networked artitans, 2.0 crafters and DIY designers. Enjoy!
